Introduction: Your First 3D Figurine, Made Simple

3D Art With C3 is a family-owned 3D printing studio in Fort Hood, TX, creating Creatables: reusable flatback designs, paint-your-own figurines, art kits, and bulk products for parties and wholesale customers. We run our 3D printers so you can focus on the fun part-adding color, personality, and small details that feel like you. Our pieces are meant to be touched, tried, and played with, not kept behind glass.

We wrote this guide for true beginners who want an easy, low-pressure way to explore DIY art projects with our figurines and Creatables. Kids, families, classrooms, and hobbyists all use the same core idea: no prior art skills needed, and messy is welcome. Our washable marker art and paint-friendly 3D printed art are built for experiments, wipe-offs, and do-overs until the colors feel right. We will walk through simple materials to start with, the basics of how to paint 3D printed figurines, friendly color mixing tips, step-by-step painting, and quick cleanup. Think of us sitting at the table with you, walking through each step, keeping the process light, practical, and enjoyable.

Gathering Your Materials: What You'll Need to Start Painting

We keep the supply list short on purpose. The goal is to sit down, open your figurine or flatback, and start adding color without fussing over fancy tools.

Core supplies from Creatables paint kits

Our Creatables paint kits are built around simple, beginner-friendly tools. When you open one, you will usually find:

3D printed piece: A figurine or flatback with clear shapes and raised details that make staying "in the lines" easier.
Acrylic paints: Basic colors that mix well and clean up with water. These are forgiving and dry at a steady pace.
Mixed brush set: A small round brush for lines and details, and a slightly wider brush for larger areas.
Simple palette: Often a plastic tray or wells so you can keep colors separate and test mixes.

That covers the essentials for painting 3D art kits for parents who want low-stress setup and simple cleanup.

Easy add-ons from home

To make painting smoother, we usually add a few household items:

Two water containers: One for rinsing brushes with darker colors, one for lighter tones, so the water stays cleaner longer.
Paper towels or an old cloth: For wiping extra water or paint off the brush and catching small spills.
Protective surface: Newspaper, a placemat, or a piece of cardboard under the figurine keeps the table safe.
Palette substitute: If your kit palette fills up, a paper plate or plastic lid works well for mixing.

Optional extras (only if you want them)

For most painting tips for beginners, we suggest starting without extras so the process feels light. If you enjoy the first round and want a bit more control, you might add:

Primer: A light coat of primer gives acrylic paint more grip. Many beginners skip this and still get strong color.
Clear sealant: Brushed or sprayed on after the paint dries to protect details and deepen color.
Detail brushes: A tiny brush helps with eyes, scales, or patterns, but a steady hand and the basic brush set work fine.

Once these pieces are gathered and your surface is set, the only thing left is to walk through how to load a brush, place your first strokes, and build color in relaxed, simple steps.

Step-by-Step Painting Process for Your First 3D Figurine

We like to think of this as a calm checklist: easy steps to paint your first 3D figurine using simple painting techniques for 3D prints. No art background needed, just patience and a bit of curiosity.

1. Get your figurine and space ready

Set your figurine on the protected surface you prepared. If you chose to use primer, make sure it is dry. If you skipped primer, that is fine; our Creatables have raised shapes and clear lines that accept paint well.

Fill both water containers, place your paper towels nearby, and set out your brushes and paints so you can see everything at a glance.

2. Start with a base coat

We begin by blocking in large areas of color, called a base coat. This lays down the main look before we worry about details or shading.

Choose 2-4 main colors for big sections like clothing, skin, scales, or fur.
Use the wider brush and add a little water to the paint so it glides but does not drip.
Paint in smooth strokes, following the form of the figurine: around curves, along edges, not across them.
If the color looks streaky, let it dry, then add a second thin layer instead of one thick coat.

The sculpted ridges and grooves on our figurines guide your brush, so staying in general areas feels easier than painting on flat paper.

3. Add a simple wash for shadows

A wash is thinned paint that flows into cracks and folds to create shadows. This is an easy way to give painting 3D printed miniatures more depth without complex blending.

Pick a darker version of one base color (for example, darker brown over light brown).
On your palette, mix paint with water until it looks like colored tea.
With the small brush, touch the wash into lines, folds, and deep areas.
Let gravity work: tilt the figurine slightly so the wash settles into recesses.
If too much collects, tap it gently with a corner of a paper towel.

We keep washes light at first. You can always repeat this step once the first layer dries.

4. Try dry brushing for easy highlights

Dry brushing adds quick highlights on raised details like hair strands, armor edges, or scales on 3D printed dragons.

Choose a lighter color than the base coat for that area.
Load a small amount of paint onto the wider brush, then wipe most of it off on a paper towel until the brush looks almost dry.
Gently sweep the brush across the raised surfaces. Use light, fast strokes.
Watch the higher spots catch the lighter color while the recesses stay darker.

This technique works well on our Creatables because the sculpted textures give the brush something to skim over, so even loose strokes look intentional.

5. Paint simple details last

Once base coats, washes, and highlights are dry, we move to small features.

Use the fine brush and keep the paint slightly thicker so it does not run.
Rest your painting hand on the table or on your other hand to steady it.
Start with easy shapes: stripes, dots, buttons, belts, or gem spots.
For eyes, think in steps: white first, then a dot of color, then a tiny black dot if you feel comfortable.

If a line wobbles or a dot grows too large, let it dry, then paint back over it with the base color. Our figurines are forgiving; layers hide most "oops" moments.

6. Final check and optional sealing

After the figurine feels done, let it sit until everything is fully dry. Look for thin spots or areas where you want a little more shadow or highlight and add a quick touch if needed.

If you chose to use a clear sealant from your materials list, apply it in thin, even coats according to the product directions. This step protects your painted 3D printed art and deepens color, but it is optional for practice pieces.

Once this process feels comfortable, it becomes a base for any future project, from painting 3D printed miniatures in art kits for kids to more detailed characters that use bolder color mixing ideas next.

Color Mixing Basics to Bring Your Figurine to Life

Once base coats, washes, and highlights feel comfortable, color starts to become the fun part. We treat color mixing basics for figurine painting as gentle experiments, not tests you can fail.

Start with primary colors you recognize

For most acrylic sets, the core colors are red, yellow, and blue, plus black and white. Those three primaries build almost everything else on a simple 3D printed figure:

Red + yellow = orange for warm fur, fire, or sweaters.
Yellow + blue = green for plants, dragons, or slime.
Blue + red = purple for cloaks, wings, or shadows.

We place small dots of each color on the palette with space between them. Then we pull a little from each puddle into a new spot to mix. This keeps the original colors clean so we can return to them later.

Adjust light and dark with white and black

Highlights and shadows from the earlier steps become stronger when we nudge the color lighter or darker first:

Add white to create a lighter tint for raised edges, cheeks, or bright clothing.
Add a tiny touch of black to deepen a color for shadows and folds.

We add dark paint in tiny amounts. It spreads fast, and a little goes a long way. If a color gets too dark, we stir in more of the original hue plus a bit of white.

Use safe spaces to test mixes

To keep painting tips for beginners low stress, we test every new mix before it touches the figurine:

Swipe a small line on the palette edge, paper plate, or scrap cardboard.
Let it dry for a minute; acrylics often dry a shade darker.
Hold the test next to the area you plan to paint and see if it fits the mood.

For DIY art projects for kids, we often set one corner of the palette as the "experiment zone" so mixed colors stay in one place and the base colors remain clear.

Let color choices stay flexible

We do not chase perfect matches. A dragon with teal scales and orange horns reads just as well as a "realistic" one. The earlier base coat, wash, and dry brushing steps keep everything looking unified, even when the colors shift from the original idea. As long as paints stay thin and layered, there is room to change your mind, glaze a new color over an old one, or test a bold mix on a small detail before using it on the whole figurine.

Cleaning Up and Caring for Your Painted Figurines

Cleaning up after painting 3D figurines should feel like the cooldown after a good creative stretch: simple, quick, and calm.

Easy cleanup for brushes and workspace

We keep cleanup tied to the same basics you used to paint. Right after you finish, rinse each brush in the darker water cup first, then in the cleaner cup. Swirl the bristles gently against the bottom instead of grinding them; that keeps the tips sharp.

After rinsing, pinch the bristles in a paper towel to squeeze out extra water and reshape the point. Lay brushes flat to dry so water does not run down into the handle. Leaving them standing in water for long periods loosens the glue and bends the tips.

For the table, most acrylic smudges on your protective surface wipe off with a damp cloth. If paint dries on plastic palettes or plates, let them soak in warm water for a few minutes, then peel or scrub the paint away with a sponge edge.

Simple care for finished paint-your-own figurines

Once your paint is fully dry, caring for paint-your-own figurines comes down to three habits: protect, store, and dust.

Protect: A thin clear sealant, brushed or sprayed on according to its directions, adds a light shell over layers and helps prevent scuffs.
Store: Keep figurines out of direct sunlight and away from heavy moisture. A shelf, display box, or lidded bin with soft spacing between pieces works well.
Dust: Use a soft, dry brush to sweep dust out of folds and textures instead of rubbing with a wet cloth.

As beginners move from first projects to a small collection, this gentle cycle-paint, enjoy, easy cleanup, simple care-turns into a steady rhythm. The less stressful the cleanup feels, the more energy stays available for choosing colors, trying new details, and returning to the next blank figure with curiosity instead of worry.

Expanding Your Creative Journey with 3D Art With C3

Once that first figurine dries and finds a spot on the shelf, the next blank piece starts to feel less intimidating and more inviting. Our Creatables line is built for that moment, when play turns into a regular creative habit for families, classrooms, and hobby groups.

Because we run our own 3D print farm, we can shape projects around how people actually paint together. For gatherings, our bulk art kits for parties keep setup simple: repeatable Creatables designs, clear details that guide the brush, and shared palettes that encourage conversation while everyone paints at their own pace.

Across the year, we rotate sculpted pieces that work as seasonal 3D decor so painters can swap colors with the calendar. A flatback that hangs on a door, a small figure that sits on a windowsill, or a themed set on a mantle turns into a low-pressure way to add personal touches to home spaces.

Retailers and teaching groups often look for consistent stock, so we also prepare wholesale 3D printed products based on our Creatables designs. That keeps paint-friendly textures, scale, and durability aligned, whether the pieces end up in art kits for kids, gift bundles, or classroom projects built around 3D printed art Fort Hood TX makers.

Underneath all of this, our goal stays the same: use approachable forms, forgiving materials, and repeatable designs so people of all ages and skill levels feel comfortable sitting down together, sharing paints, and turning simple prints into personal gifts, keepsakes, and everyday decor.
